My 35th Birthday

I turned 35 on Saturday.  It was actually pretty cool, now that I'm "over" being in my 30s, I really enjoy my birthdays.  And Claire LOVES birthdays (what kid doesn't?) so it's fun to do things up for her sake.  We started on Friday night when my parents took us out to dinner at a pizza joint, and instead of crayons for the kids, they got dough.

The three of us went to breakfast the next morning.  At a mall.  Because Claire wanted to buy me a toy.  We took her to Claire's and tried to get her ears pierced, but she wasn't having any of it.  Then I dropped a bottle of nailpolish on the tile and it splattered up DP's pant leg.  At least Claire's makes the cheap stuff and it came out easily.

That afternoon, my mother-in-law had a cake for me. Well, for the kids' sake I think. It was really sweet and I also got a giftcard to Starbucks.  I then realized they have a rewards program and I could have been earning free stuff this whole time.

Sierra's friend April came to our party and asked me if I was like, 28. She's my fave.

That night I went out with DP and his brother for drinks and shuffle board, then blackjack at the tables, then video poker.  Like 28 year olds do.

"Claire"

My kid was colouring the other day, and she's pretty good.  Like she stays in the lines for the most part.  The only thing is she'll do the entire picture in one colour.  Whatever, I'm proud, but it's not post-on-the-blog brag worthy.  Anyway so when she was done, I asked her to sign her work.  Gigi always does that, and I know Claire knows how to make a "C".  But then you guys, she did!  Okay her "i" is weird, and the other letters are wonky, but the effort is there.  Oh man, I love preschool.

And in other news, I found a grey hair. Just in time for my 35th birthday.

Eye Irritation

I had to go pick up Claire from school on Friday morning because she had eyelashes in her eye that were bothering her, but wouldn't let her teacher get them out.  So I left work at 8am, picked up Claire, and took her to Urgent Care.  (Yes, I realize how privileged that makes us.)  She was so excited because she's goomnie (just likes to go places) and laid down so the doctor could examine her. But then he got out a stick with a cotton swab on the end and my heart sank.  So did hers.  And I had to hold her down so he could get under her eyelid. Oh man I felt so sorry for her.  But it was like her corner lashes were curved up under the eyelid and irritating it.  He was kind of callous about it too, and maybe I should have taken her to the pediatrician, but in the end it all worked out.  And then I took her to a Starbucks for a cake pop and told her she didn't have to go back to school.  Mom Guilt is real y'all.

Guess You Had To Be There

Last weekend I put away all the Christmas decorations.  I know we're a little late, but it made my house feel so warm and now it's just bare and ugly.  But anyway, Claire was excited to help me because she likes to "help" me do stuff.  So after we got all the stuff put away in boxes, and I was carrying them up to the hall closet, she asked me in a scared voice, "Do we have to put my Frozen castle dollhouse in the closet too?"

She had thought because Santa brought it, we would have to put it up with the other Christmas stuff!  Oh man, my poor baby.  I really take for granted that she knows the deal, and then something like this happens and I remember she's just a little kid.

Sick Baby

I know, she's not a baby.  But when she's sick, well she's MY baby.

Claire was under the weather this weekend so we spent it at home, basically hibernating. I brought the girls over for some company and we watched football, and Frozen, and made YouTube videos. Here are my little viral stars.

I also let Claire take multiple baths a day because she felt good just sitting in the warm water.  Since Monday was a holiday, it would have been our third day just being in the house.  And because I had let DP take the car instead of dropping him to work like I normally do on holidays, Gigi and I decided to walk to Starbucks for breakfast.  With Claire on her bicycle of course.  I never pass up the chance for one of their bacon, egg, and gouda sandwiches even though I am not a huge fan of their coffee.

Starbucks was packed, and after we finally got our order, Claire had a total meltdown complete with yelling and kicking me.  I marched her right out of the store but before I could even give her the growling she so deserved, she said she'd be good and can she please still have her cake pop.  Well duh, I'm not wasting a $3 ball of smushed cake crumbs.  So we went back in and she was good, and Gigi told me that everyone was staring at us and how embarrassing it was for her.  She explained all this to me over her giant chocolate chip cookie and extra caramel, caramel Frappuccino.  Obviously I didn't feel sorry for her.  But I was embarrassed by Claire's behavior too. Hope it's not a sign of things to come!

Ice Skating

After seeing Frozen on Ice, I knew I had to take Claire ice skating.  So I picked her up last Tuesday, we dressed in layers, then headed across town to the ice rink.  Claire was so excited, and kept saying she was so happy.  Kept hugging me.  I asked her if she thought she could do it and she was like, "Yeah.  I already know how to skate."  Okay buddy.

I rented our skates and a scooter for her.  And for me, I can't skate really, just what the hell was I doing?  Luckily she was right, she did fine on her own.

She was so confident she could do it! I went around with her a couple of times, then she asked me to take a break and she was going by herself. She tried to ditch the scooter but once she realized that she in fact, could not skate, she conceded to using it.

Does she need lessons?  Or is skating just something you can pick up on your own?

4 Years Married

We celebrated our wedding anniversary last night.  In the grand scheme of things, this anniversary has always been pretty low-key, I guess we're just used to celebrating our dating anniversary and some habits die hard.  But I do wear my wedding dress that day and we take the baby out to dinner after work. She is the reason we married after all!  We always go wherever we have the most money on a giftcard, and this year it was Buffalos.  It's totally weird to have been married for four years.  It seems like such a long time.

It's rare that we get a family photo and look good in it too. DP and I had wings, obviously, and shared a basket of buffalo chips. Claire ordered the mac and cheese kids' meal, it came with mandarin oranges and she asked for lemonade. Then she ate the entire thing, and some of our buffalo chips. She proudly stuck her tummy out afterward and showed us, saying, "It looks like yours mummy! I'm big and strong like you."

Disney On Ice Presents: Frozen

The girls' uncles bought Frozen on Ice tickets for them for Christmas.  Due to unforeseen circumstances, my brother-in-law couldn't go.  But don't worry, I was MORE THAN HAPPY to take his place.  So my cousin and I spent Sunday morning with a couple hundred tiny Elsas/Anna/Olafs.  I was so excited.

I had bought Claire a new dress because she needed something long-sleeve, and the most adorable hoodie.  She had snowflake stockings and light-up Frozen shoes already, so was head-to-toe decked out.  Even her hairclips were teal with silver sparkles.

Everyone else was dressed up too.  A ton of costumes, even the grown-ups.  Claire was completely enamoured by the show, which I knew she would be.  Us four girls could recite all the lines and sing all the songs, and my poor cousin had never seen the movie before so wasn't as into it as the rest of us.  Thank goodness for beer!

We had really good seats, in the upper section, but could see the whole rink and the performers' feet.  The girls wanted snocones and since I didn't pay for the tickets, I was okay with $15 each for a plastic cup of crushed ice.

After the show, Claire wanted to watch the Zamboni because apparently it is awesome.

The New Year

Claire is at her new school and I've started my new schedule at work.  I'm back to 7am to 3:30 and oh my goodness, it's so much nicer.  I actually have time for stuff when I get off work.  Claire has said she likes her new school and she's been happy every day I picked her up, but then this morning she cried and said she didn't want to go there and could she stay home with Gramps.  Of course I felt the mom guilt because my whole reason for moving her was to make it easier for me to go to the gym after work, so I hope she's just feeling the Monday blues and it's not like they are neglecting her there or something.

Over the past few weeks of settling into our new routines, I considered quitting the blog.  It can get tedious, and sometimes I just don't feel like writing.  But then I look at the books from 2012 and 2013 and think how awesome it is that Claire can have them one day.  I put off printing 2014 because it won't fit in one book and has to be two volumes, and 2015 will probably be the same.  So maybe instead of just quitting I will cut back a bit.  Claire is getting bigger now so not everything is "OMG SHE BREATHED ON HER OWN, HERE ARE FIVE PICTURES TO SEE FOR YOURSELF."

My parents took all the kids, DP, and me out to eat dinner Friday night at Southpoint.  This picture is so typical of our life now.  I know Ramses always looks miserable but he has a Posh Spice thing going on, I promise he's a happy kid.
