Sleepover at Nana's

Claire went to have a special sleepover with Fiori at Nana's last weekend.  The plan was to bake and decorate Halloween treats.  They were SO excited.

When they got there Nana surprised them with rice krispie treats and a cake, and the girls were tasked to help with frosting cupcakes and spooky cookies.

But first they had to put on their Halloween pyjamas.  I high-tailed it out of there upon seeing all the sweets.  Good luck Nana!

A Thursday Wedding

My friend Priscilla got married last Thursday.  I kind of love the idea of an evening wedding on a weekday.  Or maybe I just love weddings.  It was at The M Resort and the ceremony was outside, the bridal party walked down the middle of the pool!

The reception was on the 16th floor.  Dinner was plated, I had fish and DP had filet mignon.  I love wedding food.  And as is the case when college friends have weddings, you tend to revert back to old times.  Which is probably how I stained my dress.

Fireman

Claire's second-favourite truck (behind the garbage truck of course) is the firetruck.  Whenever she sees either of these on the road, she yells at me to follow them.  I'm like, pretty sure that's illegal.  But she does go out to visit with our garbage man when he picks up trash on Saturdays.  So when a fireman came to her school to talk to the kids about fire, she was in all her glory.  This is Day Two of wearing her fireman hat.

More Swimming Lessons

Claire has been going to her indoor swim lessons for some time now, and last week she cried because she didn't want to go.  I had to bribe her with candy.  I think she's intimidated by how dark it is in the community center, and by the age of the kids.  Her last class had 4-5 year olds, but this class has a couple kids who are seven.  She does fine and her teacher is great, but I hate making her do something she's scared to do, especially involving the water.  I don't want her traumatized about swimming.

So I bought her a new swim suit in hopes she could go in with a better attitude this week.

It worked for the most part, she went willingly into the pool.  But then refused to do anything but float and kick, and clung to her instructor the majority of the time.  I could tell Ms. Megan was all about that, but it's not really good for the other kids.

The Aftermath

Claire had a cold, and I was exhausted from running outside.  3 miles, I know, I'm so lame.  Fiori was over so I made the kids lunch of French fries and avocado, even letting them eat in front of the iPad, they thought I was the best ever.  I made myself a cheeseburger with provolone, sliced avocado, and topped with a fried egg.  It was to die for.  Then after the Niners got demolished, the whole family took a 4-hour nap.

I let Claire stay in pyjamas that evening and she made brownies with her dad.  Sunday Fun-day after all!  (Ignore the Christmas sprinkles, it was all I had left.)

The Biggest Loser

My coworker suggested I run the Biggest Loser race at Circus Circus with her on Sunday morning, and since I could use some outdoor runs, I registered.  I've been slowly getting back into the swing of things after taking the summer off (following the winter off) so needless to say I was rusty.  With extra pounds too, making it all the more difficult.

But whatever, I had high hopes.

And driving to the strip at sunrise had me really feeling like myself again.  I guess I missed this -  getting up early to knock out miles, the nerves when you're waiting in the corral, running with other people.  Adrenaline.  It was awesome.

It was tough, can't lie.  I try not to run outside ever, since I run best under perfect conditions.  My favourite part was turning onto Las Vegas Blvd. for the final half mile.

My results weren't bad though, I was actually surprised they were so good
30:39.4 which is 9.53/mile

Promises and Princesses

On Friday night when DP was trying to put Claire to bed, he bribed her with a train ride.  As in, "If you go to sleep right now, tomorrow Mom will take you on a train ride."

So when we woke up on Saturday morning, Claire put on her best princess dress, and we set off on our adventure to find a train.  I had a few errands to make first though.  Like to stop for coffee.  And wouldn't you know, they had Halloween doughnuts, two for $2.  So Claire wanted one and to buy one for Fiori too, so we took it to her next.  Fiori loved the idea of going out in princess dresses so she put one on and off we went to Smith's.  Because I bought spinach, I had to take it home, where the girls found plastic cupcake rings to match each of their dresses.  Then I realized Claire eats a lot of cupcakes.

I had to go to Walmart and Circus Circus also, and the girls were major troopers man.  It helped that people were constantly commenting on how cute they were, and engaging them in princess talk.  And singing Let it Go.  We finally ended up at Town Square that afternoon, and they had some kind of kids' festival thing going on.  Which was horrible because everything cost money.  But not real money, tickets, which you had to buy with money somewhere down the road.  And it was hot as hell, but the girls had fun.  Fiori loves (LOVES) mermaids, so she was thrilled to see a couple.

And last but not least, they rode the train.  The whole reason we were even there.

Old Navy had football shirts so I picked up some new ones for the girls and they insisted on changing in the car before we headed to dinner.  I was starving by now and the kids had only eaten doughnuts, hashbrowns, cotton candy, and shaved ice all day, so I took them to my favourite Chinese restaurant for crispy noodles.  Comfort food.

Fall Portraits

Claire had picture day at school last week.  We dropped the ball on buying the perfect outfit (not that we've ever done that before) so had to scramble to put something together the morning of.  It actually ended up quite cute, and Claire was thrilled when DP steamed her shirt with his and she realized they matched.

Funny As Hell

We were laying in bed last night with Claire watching 'Golden Winter' on her iPad in between us.  And talking about DP getting a gym membership so he can start going to 24 Hour Fitness before work instead of being on the UNLV gym schedule which does stay open fairly late but doesn't open early enough for him to go before work.  When all of a sudden Claire lets out this huge belly laugh and sits up.  She goes, "Daddy, you are SO silly!"  (DP looks at her like what did I say?)  And she continues, "YOU can't go to the gym...only MOMMIES go to the gym!"  I had to turn around so he couldn't see my smug grin.  He tried to tell her that yes, daddies go to the gym too but she just kept busting out laughing like he was telling her the best jokes.  I was dying!

Obviously I am the only active person in the family.  According to Claire at least.  If anything, I think that is just the motivation needed for DP to get back out to the gym.

Sandwiches

I'm definitely a creature of habit, and will eat the same thing willingly for weeks.  Right now I'm on a tuna sandwich kick, with grapes/cheese/pretzels for my afternoon snack.  Last month it was canned soup with carrot sticks and ranch for snack.

Claire's school provides snacks and milk, but I have to send her lunch everyday.  And to make it easy, I pack all of hers when I pack all of mine, on Sundays.

She takes a peanut butter sandwich 3-4 days, and will get leftovers or a burrito or quesadilla the other one or two days.  She has never complained and always eats everything.  But still, I bought some jam, honey, and nutella to mix things up in her pb sandwich.  And... she hates it.  She flat out refuses jelly, and if she sees me with it, screams bloody murder that she doesn't want that stuff.  She wouldn't eat a chocolate sandwich when I made them for her and Fiori one time, which is weird because even I loved those as a kid.  One day last week I snuck some honey in her pb sandwich and the whole thing came back, and she's like, "I don't like that kind of peanut butter."

So maybe she's just a creature of habit too, and is perfectly fine eating a peanut butter sandwich every day of her childhood life.  Makes it easy for me.

Storytime

Claire makes up songs and stories.  She sings about her babies, things like "I love you so much" and "Have a great day."  It's quite uplifting.

Her stories are what gets me though.  The other day she was telling me a story about her friend Joseph.  I know she doesn't know anyone named Joseph, so I asked for more.  Well apparently Joseph lives with Mary.  Oh.  So I asked her a leading question since I figured she got this from her Christian daycare, "And don't Mary and Joseph have a little baby?"  (Hello: Jesus)  "No!" she says, "A lamb!"  MARY HAS A LITTLE LAMB.

Getting a Trim

Claire needed a haircut, but she didn't want to go to the barber, she wanted the place with a car chairs again.  And she was going to sit in the car this time.  So I had to be okay paying $17 for a boy-trim so she could sit in a car.  Whatever.

We went to a different place, but don't worry, I called ahead to ask about the car.

After:

It's actually a lot shorter than it looks in these pictures for some reason.

I asked for a Megan Rapinoe-inspired cut because Claire likes to Mohawk the front.  This way she could still have her little Mohawk but it wouldn't be in the front like a boy.  Not that it matters, obviously, since she has a boy-cut.  And after telling Claire how pretty she looks, her dad privately told me he wants it to grow out now.  I think he's afraid I'm getting carried away.  Whatever, you promise to do Anna braids every day then we'll talk.
