She Came in Like a Wrecking Ball

So you know how the kids think I'm stupid?  Like I don't know what I'm doing with Claire, and quite possibly might be the worst mother ever?  I guess I'm just too relaxed for their liking, as if they are so responsible or something.

So Claire was singing along to Miley Cyrus and I grabbed my phone to get video, which I was too late for, but what I did get was Gigi having to eat her words.  When she tells me Claire just ate a crayon, you can hear the condescension in her voice.  And then bam!  I had an answer for her this time.  She was wrong and I was right.

Although then she questioned why I was giving Claire candy, and I didn't have a good answer for that one.  Um, she likes it?

Early Morning Run

I have been killing it on the treadmill lately.  But it bums me out that I am only able to go to the gym on weekends, and only IF I have the car.  So like a dummy, I woke up at 4am on Monday morning and hit the pavement.  It was 80 degrees and dark.

Claire had "wacky sock day" at school, so was thrilled about getting to wear hers.  She made me take a close-up of her feet.

Lunch Date

I took Claire for pho at the RIO on Sunday.  She actually did pretty well.

Then she played Keno and took off under the table with the carrot garnish.

Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon

My next race has been decided!  Disney has added a new half marathon to their line-up, this one being Marvel themed.  So my cousin and I set our alarms to register as soon as it opened, and we both got in.  Considering the Disney races sell out within hours, I was thrilled.  We also registered our kids for the 100m dash, it will be Claire's first race in that she uses her own legs.

I am in the market for a Spiderman outfit (minus the mask, because sweat) and Claire can just wear her Halloween costume since she is Spidey every year anyway.

I run 5 miles at a time, that's my base, and will increase for training purposes around the end of September.  This Disney/Anaheim course is my favourite so I'm really excited.

New Clothes

Monday's Child is fair of face.

Tuesday's Child is full of grace.

Wednesday's Child is full of woe.

Thursday's Child has far to go.

Friday's Child is loving and giving.

Almost Two

I can't believe my little baby is turning 2!  We are about 10 days away and I think everything that needed to be done, is done.  The theme is Monsters and we're hosting it at my parents' house, in their backyard.  I downloaded the Care Bears font for Claire's first birthday party invitation, so you know I had to find the Monsters font for this one.  The kids LOVE the eye on the M.  And I still got use out of the Care Bears font for her name and the pertinent information.

I was actually looking at renting a bounce house for the kids when I came across this fantastic water slide, and I knew we had to have it.

We don't really do games or have much organization.  Claire's party last year was at a splash pad, we had water balloons and a piñata, and served pizza.  And the kids had an absolute blast.  This year we are just having the water slide and hotdogs for them.  I am going to set up their own little table in the backyard, which will be completely monster-ed out.  I got a table cloth, some blowouts, paper cups and bendy straws, and will serve their hotdogs on little cafeteria-style baskets.

We haven't gotten the piñata yet, DP will probably get it from the Mexican store like he has in the past.  I wonder if he'll have to special-order it since Monster stuff isn't exactly the "thing" right now.  Although even with it not being a new movie, I was surprised to find all the licensed stuff at the party store and Walmart, so maybe it is popular enough?  I also came across this swim trunks + rash guard at Kmart.  It wasn't her size so I had her try the top on in the store and it went over her head so it was settled.  Then she refused to take it off.  I'll probably do the rash guard with her bikini bottoms and she can wear the shorts some other time.  And even though it was only $1.99 for her swimsuit last year, I'm glad I didn't have to special-order this (or something like it) for this year.  Plus this was still only $6.99.  She doesn't care that it's for boys.

Tortellini Salad

I have to tell everyone about this because it's honestly the best thing I've ever made.  Except for Claire, but I don't know, the jury is still out on that one.

DP and I love that Buitoni pasta (ravioli and tortellini) but they are expensive and don't go very far, so I buy them as a treat.  I bought a package for some variety this week for our lunches instead of sandwiches every day.  I passed on the sauce because they don't heat Claire's lunches at school, and I'm fine with a touch of olive oil and herbs.

So I put the pasta up to boil while I packed Claire's snacks - grapes and pepperoni.  And it hit me.  I could use the pepperoni with the tortellini and toss in a dressing for a salad!  I am a frickin' genius!!!  Of course then I asked the Google what kind of dressing people use in pasta salad and came across a million recipes and Pinterest pins for tortellini salad, but I will maintain that I invented this fancy dish when I tell DP about it later.  The recipes also mostly called for peppers but I had already decided to use them since they were the only veggie besides peas that I had on hand.

So I tossed the tortellini with tri-colour bell peppers and pepperoni in a light vinaigrette.  I packed DP's lunch and then packed mine, then ate mine right then and there standing over the sink.  It was that good.  Behold a picture of Claire's lunch.

Tortellini Salad with mini pepperonis.

Side of cheese and avocado, her favourite.
I ended up taking out the cheese cubes and giving them to DP in his lunch, because that's a lot of cheese.  He's gonna be like, "Why does my lunch have toddler food?"

Colorado River Day Trip

On Saturday DP got cut from work early, so we decided to go for a drive to the river.  We hadn't really had a weekend day off together in a long time so even though I loathe spur-of-the-moment adventures, this time I was game.  Plus I already had Gigi with me so we decided it would be fun to bring the girls along on our day trip.  They had a blast acting crazy and then giving each other makeovers in the car.  Girls man.

No such thing as too much makeup for these two.

The Colorado River runs down the border of NV and AZ, so on the Nevada side there are hotel/casinos and on the Arizona side there are campgrounds.  The girls collapsed into a fit of giggles when we crossed over the river and they realized they were in a different state.  Silly.  And it took us forever to find a good spot to launch, but they were champs.

Laughlin, Nevada
Colorado River
Bullhead City, Arizona

Once we found a good spot, we had to blow up all of our rafts and link them together with a rope.  The current was fast, but we were in a little cove where we couldn't exactly float away.  I mean, we could have I guess, but it was shallow and I was already in there swimming around.  We brought the two girls their own rafts, but they wanted to be together.  Ok fine.  So we put them on the raft together.

Except it wasn't fine, and the first time I let them go while just holding onto the rope, Fiori had the biggest freak-out ever, complete with tears and screaming and flailing.  Claire and I were supposed to be on my raft together, and DP had his own big raft that he was finishing blowing up.  So I'm standing there, waist-deep in the river, with a baby on my hip who is trying her darndest to fling off me and into the water herself, holding a rope to the tube that Fiori is flipping out on, which is scaring Gigi because hello, turbulence, and then my own raft floats away.  So Gigi, the ever anxious mother-hen, starts screaming at me about not paying attention to my raft, and I'm like, what am I supposed to do about it? Fiori was bawling, and actively trying to claw her way up my arm, when I look up to see DP sitting in our trunk checking game scores on his phone.  If I could have drawn up the papers right then and there, I would have.

But instead, I laughed my ass off, because this was totally a scene out of a sitcom.  And my complete acceptance of the situation only furthered to anger the girls, because why the heck was I not at the appropriate level of freak-out?  So I got everyone on to the shore and swam out for my raft.  Gigi was ok trying again but Fiori insisted on sitting out, so DP stayed on shore with her and held our rope, Gigi's tube tied to mine and Claire on my lap in a the big one.  Somehow, and someway, of course DP let go of our rope, because at this point, why not?  So we start floating away and then he starts yelling for us to come back.  Except it was like, "COME BACK!!!!!!!"  (All the emotions.)  So Fiori starts crying again, Gigi is giving me the 'oh shit' face, and I'm thinking, is he serious right now?  He wants me to come back, against the current, with a baby on my lap?

Jesus take the wheel

And sweet Claire has no idea we are floating down the river to Mexico at this point in our lives, she is casually leaned back on to me with her eyes closed and her feet kicking in the water.  SO adorable.  So I closed my eyes for a moment, to try and get a few seconds of enjoyment for myself.  I knew the day was shot even though I totally wanted to just keep floating.  I opened my eyes to see Gigi looking at me quizzically so I snapped out of it.  We were kind of floating away after all.  I kicked her raft over to the shore and she grabbed onto a rock, and pulled me in by the rope, then we paddled back to our launch site.  Everyone quietly piled into the car, we got McDonald's, and headed home.

I appreciated the fact that they tried, that they indulge adventures with us, and I told them as much.  Sometimes things work out, and sometimes they don't.  But when we're together then no matter what, it's always going to be worth it to me.

That evening, after all the kids were in their respective beds, the car was unloaded and my glass of wine was poured, we sat on the back patio and DP thanked me for being so great today.  He sounded kind of amazed.  So I told him, with a heavy sigh, "You are damn lucky that I'm as wonderful a person, wife, and aunty as I am."  Smile.

Old School Fun

When we were kids, we didn't have splash pads and all that jazz.  We had a plastic wading pool (that I remember my mom boiling water to add to it because the hose water was so cold) and a sprinkler.  HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT.

So when I went to my dad's house the other day, and saw that he had bought an old school sprinkler to water his 30' x 30' patch of grass, I knew I had to get Claire out there.

Four Words

This morning on our way to school, Claire dropped her breakfast in the car and said, "Poopoo waffle fall down."  That is Four Freaking Words people.  An actual sentence.

Thursday, July 17, 2014

Claire ate four mini waffles on the way to school this morning.  Then like magic, she adopted a good mood.  I think we may be on to something here, because it was the first time in months that Claire didn't give me a hard time at drop-off.
